The mecha genre is one of the oldest and most varied in all anime and has its roots back to the late fifties. The genre was used to tell stories of war with children barely holding them together in their teens in a world where every day could be their last thing.

It can be a bit frightening to figure out where hundreds of possible shows can be seen around this world. Fortunately, ten of the top mecha anime 2020 from all time will be the focus of this list. New viewers can have a place to start, and more experienced viewers can feel better because they have looked at them all.

10. Sakura Wars the Animation

During this time of war, a third group made up of Japan and the Islands of the Republic of Oceania (JIOR), resides peacefully and economically prosperous, maintaining neutrality with their militant neighbors.

Kakumeiki Valvrave begins in a colony of JIOR outside space where the peaceful life of seventeen-year-old Haruto Tokushima is reversed as the Dorssian flotilla suddenly violates the neutral colony. Their goal is to seize the Valvraves. They are powerful but rumorous mechanized weapons, hidden in the Sakimori Academy, Haruto's school. Haruto stumbles over one of the targeted Valvraves in the subsequent chaos. Haruto enters in danger with his friends' lives and signs a contract in exchange for his humanity for his power. With the help of L-elf, an enigmatic Dorian agent and skillful strategist, Haruto and the Valvrave are launching a revolution to free the world.

8. Darling in the FranXX

In the distant future humanity was driven by gigantic beasts called Claxosaurs to near extinction, forcing surviving human beings to take shelter in massive cities called Plantations. Children brought up here are trained in the boy-girls couples to conduct pilot giant mechas known as FranXX, the only known weapons against Klaxosaurs. These children have been created for the sole aim of piloting these machines and are unaware of their existence from outside and only by defending their race.

After an aptitude test was failed, Hiro, an aspiring FranXX pilot, lost motivation and confidence. Hyro retreats to an old lake, where he meets with a mysterious young girl with two horns growing out of her head, following the ceremony of his graduation from his class. Her codename, Zero Two, is known to belong to a notorious FranXX pilot known as the 'Partner Killer.' The plantation is rocked by a sudden Klaxosaur attack before Hiro could digest the encounter. Nero Two involves the creature in FranXX, but in the skirmishes and crashes near Hiro, it is severely damaged. Zero Two is calling for Hiro to drive her mecha and the duo easily de to find her partner dead.

Unfortunately on his first journey, the SDF-1 Macross, acting on his own accord, sweeps the incoming squadron, sparking an intergalactic war, and the flood of spaceships belonging to a racial race known as the Zentradi is on the planet.

In an attempt to escape, the Macross is trying to get into the orbit of the Moon, but the ship – and the city in it – is being remote-displayed. Hikaru Ichijou, an acrobatic freestyle pilot, and Minmay Lynn, the aspiring singer are attracted by this mess. Together with the crew of Macross, these two people experience a trip full of sadness and drama that they face the cruelty of the war on their journey.

In a deep, underground village hidden from the fabled surface, Simon and Kamina were born. Kamina is a free-spirited loose cannon that aims to make its own name, while Simon is a shy young guy without any real aspirations. One day, Simon stumbles upon a mysterious object, the ignition key to an old object of war, which the duo dubbed Lagann. With the aid of Yoco Littner, a heavy blooded redhead wearing a massive gun, Simon and Kamina fend off a surprise attack from the surface.

The sky is now in a clear view in the aftermath of the battle, leading Simon and Kamina to go alongside Yoko to explore the wastelands of the surface. They will soon join in the struggle against the "Beastmen," humanoid beings who terrorize the remnant of the human race in mighty robots called 'Gunmen.' Even if they face some challenges and setbacks, the trio bravely fights these new enemies with other survivors to retrieve the surface and gradually unravel a mystery of the galaxy.

A 14-year-old boy named Renton Thurston lives in the backwater city of Bellforest. He wants to leave his home and join Gekkostate, a mercenary group that hopes to find some adventure to enhance his worldly life. But the only excitement which Renton finds in his passion to drive on the wave of Trapar particles, which are scattered throughout the air, is that of surfing between his grandfather's insistence on becoming a mechanic like himself and the pressure of his father's heritage.

All is changing as an unaccounted object crashes through the Renton's Garage which has been discovered as a light finding operation, — a robot that is capable of driving the Trapar waves — specifically known as the Zero Type Nirvash. Their meeting starts with the participation of Renton with the Gekkostate as he takes off as the co-pilot of the Nirvash next to Eureka.
